About Us

Meet Our Pastor

Pastor Joshua Hughes was born and raised in Michigan City, Indiana. It was at an young age that he received Jesus Christ as his Savior. As a teenager in High School, he was called to the ministry.

In May of 2010, Joshua graduated from Fairhaven Baptist College with a Bachelor’s degree in Pastoral Theology and Master’s degree in Bible. During that time, Joshua met Brittany Nielsen who was also attending Fairhaven Baptist College. She graduated from college the same year with a degree in Elementary Education. In the following winter of 2010, Joshua and Brittany were happily married.  In August of 2011, Joshua was ordained into the ministry.

In August of 2013, Joshua and Brittany moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he became the Assistant Pastor of Anchor Baptist Church working underneath the leadership of Pastor Randall Love. It was during this time that God blessed them with two wonderful boys, Brian and Bennett.

In August of 2016, Pastor Joshua moved his family from Salt Lake City, Utah to Frackville, Pennsylvania to become the Senior Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church. Since then, the Lord has blessed them with two more sons, Bruce and Brett.

Pastor Joshua enjoys studying the Word of God and feeding the flock. You can listen to some of his expositional messages here.

Dear Friend,

Thank you for stopping by and visiting our on-line home. Making the decision to visit a church can be a difficult one to make; one that has many factors to consider before visiting. I trust that when you decide to visit us, you will see us for who we are: a family that seeks to live out an authentic, simple, and meaningful Christian faith. Together, we are striving to become the kind of church described in the Bible, where there is powerful preaching, relevant teaching, heart-felt worship, honest friendships, constant prayer, and compassionate care for those in need.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me here. I hope to see you soon.

Because of Calvary,
Pastor Joshua Hughes

Our Church

Calvary Baptist Church originally started in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Dobuszowski during the 1930s. As the group began to grow in number, they started meeting in what was a theater at the main intersection in Frackville. A parcel of land was donated by Benjamin Filer, a St. Clair plumber, and Charles Yourshaw began construction of the church building in 1939.

While construction was ongoing, the church began to hold services in the downstairs floor of the church. When construction was finally completed, a formal dedication service was held for the Ukrainian Polish Baptist Church in December of 1940 (pictured).

By the 1970s, the church had dwindled to only a small handful of people and was without a pastor. These faithful members continued to meet at the church weekly to pray. It was in 1975 that the church became introduced to Pastor James Starr. Pastor Starr was the pastor of Calvary Independent Bible Baptist Church of Ashland, a church located a few miles away that was in need of a building. The Lord saw fit to join these two congregations, and in that year, it became Calvary Baptist Church of Frackville.

During the 1980s, the church operated “Calvary Baptist Christian School.” Due to the size of the church and the need for more classroom space, the church proposed plans to construct an addition on the building. This decision faced tense opposition from people within the community. But despite any best efforts to stop the expansion, the church was granted full permission to construct the addition. This construction was completed in 1986. Most notable about this project was that approximately 90% of the construction was completed on a volunteer basis by members of the church.

Through the last 85 years, Calvary Baptist Church has seen its fair share of ups and downs. What has been found to be true is that God is always faithful, and that, if His people are willing to remain steadfast and faithful, the work of the Lord will not cease to continue.

Since 1940, the church has been under the leadership of many different pastors. These were men that loved the Lord and labored hard to see His church continue to grow. The church is currently led by Pastor Joshua Hughes.

Despite Satan’s greatest efforts to stop the work of the Lord, Calvary Baptist Church continues to shine as a light in this spiritually dark corner of the world. Its focus has been and continually will be to exalt the Lord Jesus Christ, edify the brethren, and evangelize the lost.

What We Believe

The Scriptures

We believe that the Bible is the Word of God, that it is written by men divinely inspired of God, in the original autograph, and it is the infallible and supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct. (Isaiah 40:82 Timothy 3:15-172 Peter 1:19-21)

The King James Version shall be the official Bible used in all teachings and preaching at Calvary Baptist Church. We believe that the King James Version is the perfectly preserved translation of the original autograph containing the entirety of the word of God.

The Trinity

We believe that the Godhead eternally exists in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and that these three are one God, having precisely the same nature, attributes, and perfections; worthy of the same homage, confidence and obedience. (Matthew 28:18-19John 14:16-1826)

God – We believe that there is one and only one, true and living God, whose name is Jehovah, the Creator and Supreme ruler of all Heaven and Earth. (Genesis 1:1; Exodus 20:2-3; John 1:1; Hebrews 1:1-3)

Jesus Christ – We believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God. Christ was born of the virgin Mary, in order that He might reveal God and redeem sinful man. We believe that Jesus Christ accomplished our redemption through His death on the cross as our sinless representation, and that our justification is made sure by His literal, physical resurrection from the dead. We believe that Jesus Christ ascended physically to Heaven, and is now exalted at the right hand of God the Father, where He fulfills the ministry of High Priest, Intercessor, and Advocate. (John 1:1-2; 3:16; 11:27; Hebrews 2:9-18)

Holy Spirit – We believe that the Holy Spirit is a divine person, equal with the Father and the Son, and of the same nature and substance, that He convicts men of sin, righteousness, judgment, and bears witness to the truth. The Holy Spirit is the agent of new birth, that He seals permanently, endues, guides, teaches, witnesses, sanctifies and helps the believer, indwelling every true child of God. (John 14:16-17; Romans 8:14-27)

Sin
We believe that God created man in His own image and that man came into the world by the direct creation of God and not by the process of evolution. We believe that he was created in innocence, but that by voluntary transgression fell. We also believe that this spiritual death of the human nature has been transmitted to the entire human race, the man Jesus Christ alone being excepted, and is under just condemnation without defense or excuse before God. (Genesis 1:26-27; Romans 3:10-19; I Timothy 5:6)
Salvation

We believe that salvation is the gift of God brought to man by grace and received by personal faith and acceptance of the Lord Jesus Christ, whose precious blood was shed on Calvary for the forgiveness of our sins.

We believe that because of universal death through sin, no one can enter the Kingdom of God unless they are born again. No degree of reformation, no attainment in morality or culture, no baptism or other ordinance, however administered, can help a sinner go to Heaven. (John 3:1-7; 16-18; Ephesians 2:8-10)

Sanctification

We believe that sanctification which is a setting apart unto God is threefold:

It is positionally complete for every saved person, because their position toward God is identical with Christ’s position, since the believer “is in Christ.”

There is a progressive sanctification, wherein the Christian is to “grow in grace.”

We believe that the child of God will yet be fully sanctified when they shall see their Lord face to face and shall “be like Him.” We do not believe that the speaking in tongues is an indication of sanctification. (2 Corinthians 3:18-7:1; Ephesians 4:24; 5:25-27; 1 Thessalonians 5:23; 1 Corinthians 14:19)

Eternal Security

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, as a substitution sacrifice, and that all who believe in Him are justified on the ground, through His shed blood on the cross, and we are saved by grace through faith, wholly apart from human merit and works.

We believe that all who have been truly born again by the Spirit of God through faith in Christ are eternally secure. (John 10:29-30; Acts 13:38-39; Romans 8:35-39; Philippians 1:6)

Separation

We believe that all the saved should live in such manner as not to bring reproach upon their Saviour and Lord. (Romans 12:1-22 Corinthians 6:147:1)

Commission

We believe that it is the explicit message of our Lord to those whom He has saved, that their primary purpose in life shall be to make Christ known to the whole world, and to lead our friends and neighbors into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. (Matthew 28:18-19Acts 1:82 Corinthians 5:18-20)

The Church

We believe that the church (the Bride of Christ) is composed only of born again believers, baptized by the Holy Spirit into the body of Christ, of which He is the Head.

We believe the local church to be an assembly of born again believers of like faith and practice, baptized by immersion, united for the evangelism of the world, and for the edification of the saints, and the worship of God. (1 Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 5:23-27)

The Ordinances

We believe that water baptism and the Lord’s Supper are the only ordinances of the church and that they are scriptural means of testimony for the church in this age. We believe that water baptism is the immersion of a saved person in water, setting forth in symbol the essential facts of redemption and separation.

We believe that the Lord’s Supper is a commemoration of the Lord’s death until He comes again, wherein the symbols are bread and the fruit of the vine, and that it depicts the believer’s constant dependency upon Christ. (Matthew 3:13-17; 26:26-29; 1 Corinthians 11:26)

The Blessed Hope

We believe that according to the Word of God, the next great event in the fulfillment of prophecy will be the coming of the Lord in the air to receive to Himself, into Heaven, both His own who are alive and remain until the event, and also all who have fallen asleep in Jesus.

We believe that future events will take place in the following order: the Rapture of the Church, the Great Tribulation on earth, the Millennial Reign of Christ, the Great White Throne judgment, and All Things New. (Daniel 12; 1 Corinthians 15:51-57; 1 Thessalonians 5:13-17; Revelation 20:12-15; Revelation 21)

Eternity

We believe that all people are immortal beings and will live forever upon their conception. As a result, everyone will live forever in only one of two locations mentioned in the Bible:  Heaven or Hell.

We believe in a literal Heaven and Hell as spoken of in the Scriptures. (Matthew 10:28; Luke 12:5; 16:23; Revelation 20:11-15)
